If there ever was a game that summed up problems with our Houston Astros, it was yesterday’s. Usually, we have come to expect our offense to become more catatonic than they normally are when Roger pitches. Now in this game, they finally score for him, and we should cruise to victory, the bullpen blows it.
Yesterday the Stros scored five runs, and did some of the right things getting those runs while advancing runners and getting timely hits. Granted, they had other chances and failed, but I am not going to complain about missing a few chances while still scoring five runs. (I will concede even with baseball odds, they still should have scored a couple more.)
Roger Clemens left the game with a 5-1 lead after pitching seven strong innings. Chad Qualls, who actually has been more consistant of late, comes in and allows four runs. He made a mistake to Eric Brynes who hit a three run shot to tie the game. Later, Brad Lidge gives up the lead on a two run shot from Conor Jackson.
This one you can’t hang on the offense folks! The offense did score another run in the ninth, and just missed tying the game. Eric Munson hit a shot deep centerfield as Eric Brynes (Same annoying gnat that hit the tying homerun) covered a lot of ground to make a great catch to dash the Astros’ hopes of what should have been a game tying double.
I know some have questioned Garner for taking Roger out since he didn’t allow an earn run. Sorry, folks, I think you are wasting brain power on this. Since Roger has become an Astros he has RARELY done more than 7 innings. If you leave with a four run lead, your bullpen should be able to protect that lead over the last two innings. Garner made the right call, and if there needs to be any finger pointing, point it at Chad Qualls. He has the talent and skills to portect a four run lead.
I guess this is the big difference between last year, and this year, it seems last year that ball would have passed up Eric Brynes. I have to wonder if the Luck Gods that seem to favor us that last two seasons has left us? I don’t care how talented a team you are, you still have to be lucky sometimes to get and go deep into the playoffs.
As I side note, I really wish people would lay off Adam Everett. Yesterday, he went 3-5 with 2 RBIs. Since the All Star Break he’s hitting .308! I have to say, that is the surprise stat of the day.
Now, Lambo is going to look for some chickens to sacrifice to the baseball gods. I wonder where the closest KFC is?
