Brad Lidge out as closer

In Chicago today, manager Phil Garner made it official, Brad Lidge is out, Dan Wheeler will take over as the closer. See entire article by Alyson Footer on Astros.com. Now, I know I haven’t been very supportive of Brad Lidge (see my comment on Opening Day… OOPS!) but this move even surprised me. More specifically that it happened so soon. Brad Lidge has lost his closing edge, even though not all his blown opportunies were completely his fault, most people agree. But only one week into the season, and with 3 outings [for Lidge]?

Article goes on to say that Garner will use him in the 6th or 7th innings with Qualls and White in the setup position and Wheeler getting the close/save opportunities. With a record and 2-5 (win vs Cubs earlier), I can understand why Garner made such a, some might call hasty, move. But the article does go onto report that allowing Lidge to pitch earlier, more often in less critical situations will be helpful and maybe help him steady his pitches and control. I certainly hope so.

I have nothing against Lidge, I think he can be a good closer, and we really need “Light’s out Lidge” of 2-3 yrs ago. At least until our bats show up, but that’s another topic itself.

    Sketkar,

    All fair points…

I figured Lidge had a smaller leash this year than last, but I never expected it to be two games. I guess the 1-5 start forced the issues and Garner felt he couldn’t have any games wasted.

I am not worried about the bats yet, I still think by the end of the season will be improved over last years.
