Everett Out up to 8 Weeks

≡ Category: Articles |

Jason Kendall hits a bloop pop up to left field and we lose our shortstop for 6 to 8 weeks. Adam Everett’s great range which makes him one of the best defensive shortstops in the game cost him here. Most shortstops probably would have let the left fielder responsible for it. Everett is not the type a player to give up on a play.

It is hard to gauge what happened on the play. Typically, I would say that ball was Carlos Lee’s play to make. Lee should have called Everett off that ball. Regardless of whose play it was, miscommunication was a problem here. So often we see near misses where players are about to run into each other, or may run into each other and no one gets hurt. Everett and Lee’s collision is great example why communication between the fielders is so key. Gentlemen, I hate to say it, but this is something taught at the Little League level. This injury should have never happened.

The sad part is Everett has been hitting better of late. He had a key hit in the only win against the A’s which led to him scoring the winning run. The Astros seemed to be playing better of late and this injury happens. I know a lot of you don’t think much of Everett because he is a poor hitter. I have argued many times that Everett is a special player for his range on the field. It is ironic that his excellent range played a role with this injury. The Astros called up Eric Bruntlett to fill the roster spot. Bruntlett has made plays for us in the past, but our chances of returning to the playoffs is now diminished.

If this happened a few weeks ago I would have said that at least the astros can start hitting better. But it is a shame indeed that he now found his batting groove.

I’m starting to dislike our bullpen the more and more I see our closers blow it. I think we have a decent 4 starters, not the greatest ever but good enough for a world series. We need a or a couple of hot shot closers who can garauntee our starting pitchers a win. We need a Smoltz, Mariano, Papelbon, or BJ Ryan. All we have is Lidge (kinda). Last nights game (Game 1 vs. Angels) should have been won.

sorry I didn’t mean to type Smoltz, I know he’s a starter I was thinking Schiraldi.

You know, I don’t like the West Coast starting time. I barely make it through the 5th or 6th inning before falling asleep. And last night, I didn’t see a reason to stay up. WE WERE UP 9-4 in the 5th!! Man, it’s frustrating, our hitting has finally shown up, especially the bottom half of the lineup. Starting pitching has been okay for the last couple of series, okay giving up 4 runs, not good but not bad if we’re going to put up 8-10. Just think about the wins we COULD’VE had if the bullpen COULD’VE held the lead. I know should’ve, could’ve, but come on it can be done. We don’t have a horrible bullpen… do we??

    Alan,

You are correct, the bullpen did blow the game last night. The bullpen has struggled in recent weeks. Weird how they struggle once the team starts hitting better…

In the context of the last couple of weeks, yes, the bullpen has been a problem, but in context of the whole season; the bullpen has played fairly well, I think.

Bullpens are going to blow games over the course of the season. When a bullpen pitcher loses the game it becomes much more magnified. There is a difference between Roy O allowing a HR to give the other team the lead during the third inning vs Qualls giving up a lead change homerun in the 8th.

At this point of the season, I am not really worried about our bullpen.

Alan, you didn’t mention some good pitchers, and yes, I am sure the Astros would love to have them. Question, how do you swing the deal to get them?

Well it seems we have a 28 million set aside for a pitcher that never came through. We could buy a few good closers for the season with that money.

Well, the economics don’t quite work that way. Roger being with the club would have paid for the money he would sign for. If you got, say 2 or 3 top notch relievers for that money, you won’t get 28 million back in your investment.

I don’t follow other teams too closely but i’m sure a trade of a few guys in our bottom line up for a real good closer could benifit a few teams out there.
