Biggio Announces Retirement

Craig Biggio announces his retirement and he hits a grand slam.  Go Figure!

I remember when he first came up as a catcher.  My grandmother could steal on him, but he could hit, steal bases and do the role of a lead off hitter.  Very unusual for a catcher, but Biggio has always been unusual. However, one year, he did make the All Star-Team as a catcher.

He moved to second base which was his more natural position which anchored the right side of the Astros infield with that other player with the name of Bagwell.  He would also make the All-Star Team as second baseman as well.  The only player to make it at those two positions.

It is still hard to believe it has been twenty years since he entered the league.  I remember his rookie season.  His whole career he has played the game the right way.  With Grit and Dirt!

As a fan, I have appreciated watching him play, and look forward to his induction to Hall of Fame.  The ideal dream would be he and Bagwell are inducted the same year.  The two faces of Astros Baseball!

I just want to end by saying three things….

1) Craig, thanks for memories…

2) Chris Burke, you better be ready next season, the position is yours.

3) Craig, if you are going to hit Grand Slams, you should announce your retirement every day.

I know this has nothing to do with the topic but Phil Garner might not see another season after what just happened. 11 Runs, 11 Runs, 11 Runs!!! You don’t come back from 11 runs, it doesn’t happen. He should of been out after 5-6 runs. I’ve never been a fan of Jennings from the start. Now he’s Devaluable, we’re going to have a hard time trying to trade that guy. We should have one, the way we were hitting off of that AAA pitcher. Chris Burke needs a reality check also. I agree with Skekar. Start new with everyone but Lee, Pence, Lidge, Backe, Ausmus, Berkman, and we can keep the new 3B man. Just get rid of them all. They make me sick. What about Carlos Lee, that guy can’t run to save his life. What I thought should have been a triple was double, and I thought any normal fielder could have made some of the balls he let drop. Chris Burke…I don’t know about him. Whats the contract situations with Jennings and Burke?

Yeah… 11 runs!!!!!!!!! We talk about that in show 24, will be out in a couple of days. On your question about Chris Burke and Jennings, Chris Burke signed a 1-year contract, for $415,500 and Jason Jennings trade deal was for $5.5 million with an option to extend that, otherwise he’ll be a free agent at the end of the season. No option there, take the loss and let him go. Let’s not forget we also have Woody Williams for 2-year $12.5 million.

Thats what we have to do. I use to defend Garner alot. But not now.

Pitching – Keep Oswalt, Backe, maybe Williams…I think he’s overpaid. Clean the rest of the pitching out

There are a lot of Pitchers up for grabs in 08 that we could really use.

Infield – Berkman (1B), Winnington, Everett. Get rid of Burke. Get them a nice Catcher that can hit. Why don’t we resign Jeff Kent in 08?

I hear Ken Griffey will trade so he can retire with a World Series, if we put enough good Pitchers in, he might bite.

    Outfield: Lee, Pence, .

I don’t know, just brainstorming here. I’m almost tempted to start focusing on 08 and not the post season anymore.

    Hey Al,

I am still cool with Garner. I think he is doing the best with what he has.

I don’t have a problem with Burke, but if the Astros can get something better, I wouldn’t have a problem with that either.

The fact is, we are victims of our success. There is really nothing at the AAA or AA levels? Why? Because losing draft picks… also, not drafting high because of the success.

There is some talent at the A level, but it will be a while before we can see any results there.

The Jennings deal at the time looked like a wash, but it is now looking like a bad deal now. Because of his last outing, we are not going to get anything for him if we traded him.

From what I understand, the Astros are looking for a leadoff/CF player, and move Pence to RF.

    We have to see….
