I am sure all of you have heard already…
Tim Purpura and Phil Garner have been fired from their respected positions.
Let me discuss the easy one first…
Phil Garner… I personally think Phil got a raw deal. I read on Richard Justice’s sports blog some of the fans reactions. The feelings on Garner were mixed. Some were very happy he got canned, others disappointed. I know some fans felt he made some bad game decisions, but when your club is struggling, you sometimes have to go against baseball conventional wisdom.
The more complicated issue, Tim Purpura…
Most people on the sports blog were very supportive of this move. You look at the results of Purpura’s moves and it seems like an open and shut case. Or is it?
I am not saying Purpura is a great GM, and didn’t deserve to be fired. The question is, is he being fairly evaluated? Working for Uncle Drayton as a GM isn’t easy. Uncle Drayton also has Tal Smith he relies on, so who in reality the GM, Tal Smith or Tim Purpura?
Also, you only have so much money to spend. A few fans on Justice’s blog talked about going out and getting free agents. This just proves these people really don’t understand baseball. They somehow think the Astros can complete with the Yankees, Mets, and Red Sox pursuing free agents, when we only have percentage of the team income of those clubs.
Again, another way as a GM for the Astros you have your hands tied….. There is no way Uncle Drayton will spend that kind of money (nor should he) I always find it interesting how easy it is to suggest to someone how to spend their money. How would you like your neighbor telling you need to buy a BMW when all you can afford is a Saturn?
My other concern is Drayton during the press conference. He kept talking about leadership…my question is, can he say that while looking in the mirror?
I do think the club should have a better record than we currently do, but do we really have the talent to win the division? I do think so, go back and listen to our last show…
I do think the hiring of Cecil Cooper is a good thing for the club. I hope he does well.
Peace

My dad died in 03 an avid astro fan. He died at 87. I cried when Phil Garner took the astros to the Big win and wish my dad was there to see it. I am glad though that he missed the firing of phil Garner and 75% of the poll on this site agree.
The problem with sports are fair weather fans and boss’s!!!!!
Love you Phil
